This is a proposal for my 3 minute wonder documentary film.
Proposal
Original ideas
At the very first start I had 3 ideas for my media text documentary style. My first idea is about ''adults with learning difficulties shows'' (seagull theatre in Lowestoft) which is about people with learning difficulties including autism, downs syndrome who work as an actor/actress in this theatre (this film will mainly show about fact, opinion, process and improvement for those with learning difficulties).
The second idea which was suggested by the teacher is about me as a person from Thailand in the UK, which mainly focuses on me, including the way I feel living in the UK, how hard is it to change everything to fit in to the culture, my original every day life and my family back ground.
My third idea is about a teenager who was abused when he was a child which is my personal interest and I believe this should be exposed to the public. This is a very interesting idea, think it is one of the best ideas I have out of all. However after talk to my teacher (Ellie) she suggested that this topic will be very hard to create because I will need to cover up the person's identity and plus the time I'm given to create this video wont be enough, and to make this video I'll have to be very careful of what I am doing. After the suggestion I stuck with very first idea which was The Seagull Theatre because my second ideas have some of the personal issues of why I cant make it.
I chose number 1 - learing difficult and theatre
My documentary 3 minutes wonder ideas is about people who work with those who have learning difficulties at The Seagull Theatre in my area. From my research I have found a few interesting techniques that can be used in my documentary film, such as voice over to describe the situation but at the same time the character is talking, and this way sound track can be used. This film will mainly focus on the feeling and process and what the staff love about their jobs. As those people with disability work at The Seagull Theatre this means I'll film behind the stage and in front of the stage if with the permission of the theatre and the people.
If possible I'll also interview the manage to get an in depth opinion of why he's running this theatre.
Purpose
The main purpose of this documentary is to challenge the usual stereotypes about people with disability by focusing on the staff's opinion and experience. Without a story board, because this is a documentary style, I'll have to used recce techniques and decide where the camera can be put beforehand. To make this form of documentary successful I'll have to use mixture of different documentary techniques and styles but base it on observational documentary. This is special interest type of documentary also it's also my personal interest and I believe this assessment can be used as a opportunity for me to access the way this theatre's running and learn more about those people.
Target audience
From my primary research I believe my main target audience is a slightly older teenager to middle age between 18 - 50. However this means there will also be people of other ages that are interested in my documentary subject for example the age between 15-17 and 50+. I also believe this subject can have a very wild range of audience including people who have disability in their family.
Location
I'll film at the seagull theatre in Lowestoft which is about 35 minutes walk from my house and this shouldn't make to much of a problem for me. I know one of the staff that work there very well and this will make it quite easy for me to access in the building (as the person I know has asked for permission for me).
Who will need to be in the scene
To make this scene successful I'll need to have the staff, those actor/actress with disability and even better with the manager to express their view and show the way they work in the film. In this project I'm working on my own so it will take less time to film because I wont need to make an agreement with other students. I can also design how I want it to be exactly and I will need to take part as a director and editor.
Interview
My idea in this film will mainly be 'talking heads', this means I'll need to provide the interviewee the questions and give them times to be able to think what they going to talk about. So the question for the actor, actress with disability is how they feel about working in The Seagull Theatre. The question for the staff will be about how they feel working with disabled people and what they love about it. If I can interview the head officer the question for him/her will be what is the purpose this theatre.
Props and budget
Props and costumes will be usual for every day life to make this documentary style narrative and look as normal as possible. This means I wont need to provide props but will need filming equipment e.g. camera, tripod etc. As I don't have any budget given to make this documentary so if I need anything in order to be able to created this documentary style I'll have to spend my money.
Update after discussion with my teacher
I need to work out who I will focus the documentary on - In the documentary I'm not going to focus on one person, so I'll focus on the staff/disability people's feeling and the process that they are giving during the acting. The main point of this documentary is to show the main purpose of the theatre. By using mixture of documentary style filming and editing techniques I believe it will help to get to the audience 's emotion.
